I took a carry on bag successfully on the outbound trip. No cost for carry on, IF they fit in the cage at the boarding gate. I watched someone repeatedly try to make theirs fit (picture a DD being crammed into a B cup) and the gate rejected it so she had to check it.
On the return trip, I knew mine wouldn't fit (it was overpacked with all the money I won. lol) so I checked it.
If you don't check your bag, make sure you follow the rules for liquids.

Yes carry-on limits are fun. You're allowed one carry-on and one personal item (purse, laptop bag, much smaller carry-on bag). No full size hairsprays, hair gels, shampoo, lotions, eye solution, or other liquidy goo. It has to be 3 oz or smaller. A trip to the travel aisle at Target is a good thing . If you can't find your product in travel size or can't live without it, you'll have to check your bag.
